FAQ

What materials do you use for your hardware?

All Better Workshop pieces are primarily made from brass, steel, and aluminum. Each material is selected for its durability, workability, and capacity to develop a surface with character over time.

Are your pieces sealed or lacquered?
Our steel pieces are waxed to slow oxidation. Pieces made from brass and aluminum may be left unsealed and open to atmosphere. In all cases, surfaces are intended to change subtly with handling, use, and environmental conditions.

How will the finish change over time?

Brass and aluminum naturally develop a patina through touch and exposure to the atmosphere, with brass deepening to a warm yellow and aluminum taking on a softer, lighter tone. Our steel pieces will change the least, but may show some lightening in areas of high touch. These transformations are part of how our work lives, revealing its history and relationship to the space around it.

How do I care for my hardware?

All hardware can be cleaned with a small amount of mild dish soap and a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners and dry thoroughly after washing. For items you wish to preserve the current finish of, periodic application of a microcrystalline wax will help maintain a seal against the atmosphere.

How do I install my hardware?

All hardware is supplied with appropriate mounting fasteners for wood installation. Alternative fasteners can be provided upon request. Installation instructions are not included; professional installation is recommended where appropriate.

Will my piece look exactly like the one pictured?

Subtle variations in surface and finish are inherent to the making process. Each piece is consistent in form and function, but will carry its own surface character.

Are items in stock or made to order?
